Plan your move in Houston
All-in cost requires more than rent: air conditioning, car and parking, flood or storm exposure and the exact commute are material.

Best starting areas for
Students
Third Ward/UH/TSU and institution-specific corridors should lead the search.
Remote workers
Heights, Montrose and Spring Branch can work depending on budget and space.
Newcomers
METRORail is useful only for certain corridors; do not assume Houston is rail-centric.
Professionals
The Medical Center, Downtown, Energy Corridor and Uptown are separate commuting worlds.

Private rooms versus shared rooms
Current Roomies examples include around $700 including bills, west Houston/77077 around $799, UH/TSU around $850, multiple rooms around $900 and Heights ensuite/private-bath products around $1,100–1,200.
Shared-room listings must remain outside the private-room aggregate.
METRO route and fare scope
Current official fares include local bus $1.25, METRORail $1.25, curb2curb $1.25 and discounted local fare $0.60. Park & Ride is zone-based and higher; do not flatten it into the local fare.
Test METRO, car, parking, transfers and late service for the actual job corridor.
Texas handling rules without a numeric cap
Texas has no statewide numerical security-deposit cap for ordinary private residential tenancy, but statutory rules still govern return, deductions and accounting, generally within 30 days after surrender subject to conditions. Security is not automatically last month’s rent.
Keep deposit, advance, damage claims, utilities and written authority separate.
AC, utilities and storm resilience
Verify AC, electricity, water, Internet, parking, furniture, minimum stay, power-outage resilience, ground-floor exposure and renter’s insurance.
Houston rental and payment risks
Flood and storm decisions belong at the address or building level, not in a neighborhood safety ranking.
- Bellaire or West University property is silently labeled Houston.
- “No cap” is misrepresented as no deposit law.
- Shared bed enters the private-room range.
- AC or electricity is omitted.
- Flood or storm risk is generalized by district.
- Car or parking is omitted in Energy Corridor/Uptown comparisons.
- Subletter cannot prove authority.
Before you pay for a room in Houston
- The product is a private room.
- Municipality and address are correctly classified.
- Deposit, refund and deduction terms are written.
- I understand Texas has no numeric cap but has handling rules.
- I checked METRO and car commute.
- AC, electricity and parking are explicit.
- I checked flood/storm exposure at the actual property.
- I retained payment and condition evidence.
