Room budget

The City of Copenhagen’s official housing guidance gives approximately DKK 4,000–6,000/month for a single room in a shared flat. University guidance broadly places international accommodation around DKK 4,000–10,000+, depending on type and location. Use the city figure as the generic shared-room benchmark and treat higher products separately.

Transport and cycling

Copenhagen’s public transport is zone-based. DSB’s Commuter Card is valid for 30–60 days and price depends on zones, Metro inclusion, validity period and product. Link to the current planner rather than hard-coding one monthly fare. Compare safe bicycle storage, winter commute tolerance, distance to work or campus and Metro or S-train backup.

Deposit, prepaid rent and current rent

Danish rental rules allow a deposit of up to three months’ rent and prepaid rent of up to three months’ rent. A landlord can therefore potentially require six months’ rent in deposit and prepaid rent, in addition to current rent due at move-in. This does not mean every room demands that much.

Furnished rooms and stay length

Exchange and student inventory is often furnished, while ordinary private shares may not be. Check furniture, utilities, internet, CPR registration, fixed dates, subletting permission and whether deposit and prepaid rent are separated.

Copenhagen rental scam patterns

CBS and Danish police guidance highlight unusually cheap central rooms, landlords abroad, refusal to arrange live viewing, quick-deposit pressure, lack of ownership or control and unusual foreign payment methods. Verify address and ownership and, where possible, use a traceable Danish bank payment.
