Current room examples include around R$1,300–R$1,350 for furnished rooms in Copacabana, about R$1,400 in Laranjeiras, around R$2,400 for a larger room in Tijuca, around R$2,600 for some Copacabana rooms and around R$2,800 for a Barra da Tijuca suite. These examples demonstrate range; they are not a statistical city average.

Rio’s shape matters

Current reference fares are MetrôRio R$7.90, municipal bus R$5.00, BRT R$5.00 and VLT R$5.00. Rio’s municipal payment system also moved further toward Jaé in 2026, including changes to cash payment and integration.

Identify whether daily travel is Metro, BRT, bus or a combination; test the peak route; check tunnel, bridge and corridor bottlenecks; and include air-conditioning electricity in true housing cost when it is not included.

Deposit and caução

Brazil’s Lei do Inquilinato permits several forms of rental guarantee. Where a cash caução is used for a standard residential tenancy, it may not exceed three months’ rent.

For room arrangements, establish whether you are renting from the owner, subletting from a tenant, living with the owner or buying a lodging or temporary-accommodation service. Get rent, deposit, services and notice terms in writing.

Furnishing and electricity

Furnished rooms are common, especially in Copacabana, Botafogo, Barra and international or temporary inventory. “Utilities included” deserves particular attention because air conditioning can materially change electricity consumption.

Ask whether electricity is included or capped, whether the room has AC, whether internet and laundry are included, whether condominium charges are included and whether a short stay carries a premium.

Rio rental scam patterns

A 2026 Rio police investigation reported a scheme in which digital platforms were used to advertise nonexistent or unavailable Zona Sul properties and victims were induced to make advance payments to reserve them.

• An advance deposit is requested before credible viewing or verification.
• A high-demand Zona Sul property is advertised at an implausible discount.
• The advertiser cannot establish authority over the property.
• Bank or Pix recipient is unrelated to the contract party.
• The advertiser disappears after a “reservation” payment.
